A belief that only London, New York, and Tokyo adhere to such criteria, and thus, only they can be deemed “global cities.” It must be a market for these developments and innovations.It must be the site of development and innovation in the services and finance sectors.It must be a location of high-powered service industries and centre of international finance.It must be an essential command centre in the world economy.She goes on to list these characteristics for her interpretation of a global city: ![]() The term “global city,” is, more often than not, attributed to Saskia Sassen, a professor of sociology at Columbia University, as a result of her 1991 work The Global City: New York, London, Tokyo, in which she states that global cities first appeared in 1973, with the advent of post-industrial cities. It just sounds sophisticated, doesn’t it?īut what exactly is a global city? What characteristics make it up? And why the need for the term at all?ĭrawing mainly upon David Block’s book Multilingual Identities in a Global City: London Stories, (a really fantastic read for those interested in the ever-changing landscape and culture of London), I will lay out a brief history of the term, along with the characteristics (so far) that define a global city. More and more, especially in the last decade as the rate of globalization increased, the term “global city,” is being used ever more often to describe those booming powerhouses of cities that seem to take over world news and the world economy.
